Will China find a ‘New Normal’? Slow-down, Reform, and Policy Change

As part of our ChinaTalks Lecture Series, we proudly present Barry Naughton, an internationally recognised expert on China's economy. Barry Naughton is Professor of Chinese Economy at UC San Diego. He is one of the world’s most highly respected economists working on China, and an authority on the Chinese economy with an emphasis on issues related to industry, trade, finance and China's transition to a market economy.

Abstract: China has reached an inevitable turning-point, as it enters middle income status and growth slows from previous miraculous rates. However, while earlier maturing economies in East Asia shifted towards a more “light touch” approach to government, or even democratization, China under Xi Jinping has instead opted for a kind of authoritarian revival. Can Xi’s attempt to drive a new stage of economic, political and social transformation work? Policy reverses in 2015 have led to new approaches in 2016, but formidable obstacles and increasing risks still lie ahead.

The event is open to the public but registration is needed in order participate.

Registration will close on the 30th of April. Register for for 'Will China find a 'New Normal'?
