Working Group for Sound in the Expanded Field Launch Event

New York based artist Kabir Carter will present Space and Body, an exploration of connections between New York City's 1970s underground dance music scene, and contemporaneous work with sound in the visual arts.

Carter's presentation will include details regarding the architectural acoustics and sound systems of early dance clubs, the development of durational sound materials for alternative listening modes, and the emergence of now familiar and codified formal systems for presenting sound in space for social dancing and art exhibiting.

Kabir Carter has exhibited and presented his work in museums, art exhibition spaces, and public environments throughout the United States and Europe. He has received awards from Bergen Kommune, Danish Arts Council, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, and Niedersächsisches Ministerium für Wissenschaft und Kultur, among others. He holds an MFA from the Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts at Bard College, where he was a Joseph Hartog Fellow.

The presentation will launch the Working Group for Sound in the Expanded Field, a discursive project that uses workshops and other sound focused activities to examine sound’s role in daily life.

The Working Group for Sound in the Expanded Field brings sounds into people and people into the lives of acoustic spaces. Participants will exercise and expand their abilities to hear beyond their ears and into other parts of their bodies, within unpredictable clusters of body parts, through architectural structures, and via air pockets and aquatic spaces, alleviating listening from the burden of predefined meanings of hearing sounds.
