Genetics of the past: Possibilities and limitations: an introduction to the lecture series and DNA analysis

The lecturer Luise Ørsted Brandt preparing a sample for ancient DNA analysis.

In this first lecture in the series ATOMS (Analytic Tools for Organic Material Studies) Luise Ørsted Brandt, Centre for Textile Research (CTR), will lecture on ancient DNA methodologies and their application.

Over the past two decades, the analysis of ancient DNA has contributed to the humanities with valuable genetic data about living organisms form the past. The method has encountered challenges such as contamination and degradation but also experienced a technical revolution which now enables the reading of the entire genetic material of a prehistoric individual.

This lecture aims at providing the participants with an understanding of ancient DNA methodologies along with the ability to critically assess their applications, the potential pitfalls and how to interpret the data.
