Identifying ancient fibers: light microscopy of hair

In this ATOMS lecture Anne Lisbeth Schmidt, conservator at the National Museum of Denmark will present techniques for identifying ancient fibers using light microscopy of hair.

The lecture will go through:

  • The morphology of skin and hair.
  • Sampling of animal material (hair and skin) for species identification (microscopy, DNA-analysis etc.).
  • Preparation and mounting of hair samples for microscopy: longitudinal mounting and cross-section.
  • Performance of light microscopy.
  • Sampling of reference material.
