Medieval Kings and Symbolic Landscapes in Western Ireland

Frokostmøde i Middelaldercentret. Denne gang med oplæg af James Schryver (University of Minnesota).

This research centers around recent work in a number of fields related to medieval Ireland and Gaelic-Irish (as opposed to Anglo-Norman) society over the last two decades that has begun to shed light on the archaeology and settlement of the western, Gaelic controlled portion of the island in the late medieval period (1169-1534). In particular archaeological investigations in north Co. Roscommon are illuminating the reign of one of the most important dynasties in the province of Connacht from roughly the late tenth to the late fifteenth century.

Piecing together all of these new strands of information, we can begin to assemble an extremely interesting picture of the O’Conors that causes us to change our understanding of Gaelic society in Ireland during this period.

In addition to looking outward and conquering castles from the Anglo-Normans, the O’Conors seem to have turned inwards and built their own at the same time as they used more traditional methods of associating themselves with the local landscapes.
