Second Homes - 4Cities Annual International Conference 2015
Contemporary urbanity cannot be understood without taking into account the role of Second Homes.
Most immediately, Second Homes refer to allotment gardens, camping sites, summerhouses, holiday apartments and vacation resorts; they have become important components in the life of European cities since the Second World War in particular.
More generally, Second Homes may be understood as places which differ from the First Homes of contemporary citizens.
Sometimes such Second Homes function as supplements and bring about qualities that were not present in the First Homes.
In other situations, Second Homes provide places for temporary living when life in one's First Home is no longer possible.
Just think of migrants, people in exile, homeless people - or elderly people who cannot live on their own but stay in old people's homes.
The 4Cities annual international conference will provide a multidisciplinary reflection on this diverse phenomenon.
