Queering Art History

Join pioneering scholar Richard Meyer for a wide-ranging discussion of art and queer culture across a broad range of historical examples and creative contexts. Meyer will demonstrate how the flamboyant refusal of social and sexual norms has fueled the creation of queer art and life from the late 19th century to the present.

Professor Richard Meyer is Robert and Ruth Halperin Professor in Art History at Stanford University. His books include Outlaw Representation: Censorship and Homosexuality in Twentieth-Century American Art (2002), What Was Contemporary Art? (2013), a study of the idea of "the contemporary" in early twentieth-century American art, and, with Catherine Lord, Art and Queer Culture (2013), a survey focusing on the dialogue between visual art and non-normative sexualities from 1885 to the present.
